Obituary for Elva Villarreal

Elva was born Maria Elva Aguilar Guerra. She was born in Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Born to Ignacio Aguilar and Guillermina Guerra on August 20, 1932, the family included brothers Jesus and Ignacio, and sisters Guadalupe and Alicia. She and her mother managed a small general store in their town. Life in rural northern Mexico was considerably difficult by today’s standards. She left school at an early age to help her family.
As a young lady she met a young man who was a carpenter, Jose Villarreal, whom she married on September 1, 1957. Jose and Elva later had 6 sons. The first, Jose Ignacio, was born in Mexico, his five brothers were born in San Juan, Hidalgo County, Texas. The other sons are Carlos, Ricardo, Oscar, Armando and Daniel. Their fifth child, Armando, was born with special needs. He preceded her in death at the age of 51, last December. Her husband preceded her on March 4, 2003.
Life was sometimes difficult trying to raise 6 sons in south Texas, with your husband out most of the time working two jobs to make ends meet. Not having any daughters, she taught her sons to properly clean and maintain a home, as well as to be obedient, faithful and to cooperate with each other. Her husband taught her sons the construction trade, and specifically how to build homes.
Elva’s constant example of hard work and tenacity was a factor in the success of her children. The eldest, Jose, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Architectural Engineering, he was an active duty Naval Officer, Professional Engineer and later went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. The second son, Carlos, stayed in the construction trade. He later would be an influential leader in his Church, along with leading a team of missionaries in Mexico. The third son, Ricky, graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, after having served as a full-time missionary in the Dominican Republic. The fourth son, Oscar, served in the United States Marine Corp, then led his family of 6 children while being a Scout Master and expert automobile mechanic. Armando was born blind in an eye and mostly deaf; however, he helped by working for more than 10 years as a cashier at the local grocery store and kept Elva company after her husband passed on. The sixth son, Daniel, earned a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology and is now a successful computer programmer. Danny served a full-time mission for his Church in Venezuela.
Elva was greatly loved by her 5 daughters-in-law, 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Nine of her grandchildren are married. The legacy that she left her family will endure forever.
