Obituary for Gaby Gail Hill

Gaby Hill
September 7, 1948 – September 26, 2017

Gaby Gail Ginn Hill, 69, a resident of Boerne for 13 years, entered eternal rest on September 26, 2017. Gaby was born to loving parents, Vernon Austin and Cora Emma Ginn, in Houston, Texas, on September 7, 1948. She would say they were her “first teachers”. Devotion to traditional family values, worship, and community service would always remain the focus of her journey through life.
When Gaby was an infant, the family moved to San Antonio and made their home in Harlandale where her love for the Lord, music, theater, and teaching began. She graduated in 1966, from Harlandale High School, home of the Indians. The positive experiences of her youth were the foundation for her life of service and patriotism. She was the last Colonel of the Gold Battalion, a military style pep squad. It was inspired by the armed forces and was the largest organization in the school. Her portrait and Indian headdress are on display in the school lobby, marking the end of an era.
Gaby attended Sul Ross State University where she was active in many clubs, theater, choral music and was a cheerleader. In 1969, she traveled with a USO Show entertaining the troops in the Pacific Command. She was named Woman of the Year for the class of 1970, earning a Bachelor of Music degree.
Her teaching career began as Choral Director at East Central High School in San Antonio and “Coach Ginn” directed the school’s first Broadway musical, Lil’ Abner. She met the love of her life on a blind date in Presidio, Texas, where he was stationed with the U.S. Border Patrol. On January 6, 1973, Gaby married Stephen Lee Hill in a ceremony at Harlandale United Methodist Church. They made their first home in Presidio where the newlywed, Mrs. Hill, was a classroom teacher, organized a girl’s choir, Las Posada, and wrote the Presidio School Song that is sung to this day.
In 1975 Gaby and Steve moved to Kingsville, Texas where they resided for 13 years and began their family. She commuted to Corpus Christi where she was on staff in the Tuloso-Midway I.S.D. and later on the Kingsville I.S.D. Over the years, she taught all levels from Pre-K to High School. She put her teaching career “on hold” for five years as family needs “came first.”
In 1987, Steve and Gaby moved to McAllen where they lived for 17 years. She was the music specialist at L.B. Johnson Elementary School in Edinburg. The last twelve years of her career were spent in the music room at Wilson Elementary School. Every staff member would always be remembered on their birthday with a choreographed presentation recognizing their special day. Numerous patriotic and Christmas musical productions were performed around the community. Gaby was named the 2004 McAllen Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Upon retirement, the Hills moved to Boerne in June of 2004. Gaby was a Charter Staff Member of the YMCA and volunteered at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Bulverde. As a substitute teacher in Boerne ISD for 10 years, Mrs. Hill often said, “Kids keep you current.” As a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, she was a beloved parishioner and very active in the life of the parish.
Gaby is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 44 years, Steve Hill and their children, Devon Jenae Hill of George West and Lee Austin Hill of Boerne.
As Gaby expressed upon being named Wilson Teacher of the Year, “My life is rich in the joy of giving back some of what was given to me.”
