Lewis Birdsong
January 13, 1923 – September 19, 2017

Lewis Franklin Birdsong was born to Lewis and Rose Appel Birdsong on January 13, 1923, in San Antonio, Texas. His father owned the first automobile dealership in San Antonio. The dealership featured the Franklin automobile for which Lewis was named. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and a resident of Boerne since 1975.

Lewis died on September 19, 2017, in Helotes, Texas, at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Betty Birdsong; two sons, Jay Birdsong and his wife Kristen, and Michael Birdsong; a daughter, Bernadette Vogel and her husband Robert; four granddaughters, Nicole Birdsong, Sarah Birdsong, Marissa Miller, and Myka Miller; a niece, Gerianne Canny; and two nephews, Jeff High and Steve High. He is preceded in death by his son, Lewis Frederic.

Lewis graduated from high school in San Antonio. He was only 18 years old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor led to his strong determination to become a Marine. He was so proud to be a Marine and to serve his country during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, he pursued his college education and graduated from Indiana Tech University. He married Betty Ross in 1952 and together they had four children. He worked at Kelly Air Force Base for 30 years until his retirement in 1976. He excelled at solving algebra, algorithms and advanced mathematical problems, even developing computer programs to solve some of them. He had a tremendous love for animals. He also had an extraordinary musical talent and could often be observed playing the piano and organ. He played by ear and his passion for music followed him all the days of his life.
