Obituary for Lillian Marie Koppen

Lillian Marie Koppen
September 5, 1932 – March 9, 2018
Lillian was born on September 6, 1932 to Herbert and Esther Edsall in Watonga, Oklahoma, where she grew up. After graduation from high school, she moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Phillips Business College, winning many awards and recognition for her secretarial skills—especially her typing with outstanding speed and accuracy.
In 1957, she met Eldridge (Al) Koppen when he was going through Air Force flight training school in Enid, and they were married on April 19th the following year. She gave birth to son Mark in 1960, and then they adopted daughters Lisa in 1963 and Gayle in 1965. The family moved many times over the years, and was fortunate at one time to be assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria, where they spent 3 years and were afforded the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. After her children were grown, Lillian went back to work. She worked for Gill Savings until it closed, then worked at FDIC, and later worked on various jobs at USAA, where she was always requested when something needed to be done quickly and accurately. She was a life-long Methodist, and since 1984 was a member of First United Methodist Church of Boerne, where she served as a First Friend (volunteer administrative assistant) for 12 years, after which neuropathy in her legs made it too difficult for her to get to and from the job.
In September 2017, her condition worsened until such time as the Visiting Angels organization was needed to provide support, and our special thanks go out to Gloria and Dana for their outstanding, compassionate care for her.
On Tuesday, March 6, she was diagnosed as having advanced ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The following day, she had a severe breathing problem and was taken to Main Methodist Hospital, and went from the ER to intensive care, where nurses Monica, Adrienne, and Idy provided wonderful support. Her condition worsened further, and with her family in attendance, was called to be with her Lord and Savior the morning of Friday, March 9th.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Hazel Ariola; and brother Robert Edsall. She leaves behind her husband Al; son Mark (Carrie); daughters Lisa Norwitz and Gayle Koppen; and granddaughters Lauren Sengebush, Kali Lewis (Justis) and Brittany Koppen, as well as many other relatives outside the immediate family.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 205 James Street, Boerne, Texas at 1pm on Saturday, March 17th. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Association at or First United Methodist Church of Boerne would be sincerely appreciated.
