Obituary for Robert "Dr. Bob" Ernest Carignan

Robert Ernest Carignan (89) of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 9th, surrounded by family.
Robert was born on February 12, 1928, in Dracut, Massachusetts. The fourth of twelve children, his parents were Ernest and Leona (Bourque) Carignan. He joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and graduated from Officers Candidate School.
In 1950, he married Colanthia Rippon. After their wedding he was posted to Paris, France where they lived until 1954.
Robert was assigned to West Point where he served as a faculty member teaching Economics and Government. While in the Army, he earned both his Masters of Business Administration from Harvard University and his Doctorate in Public Administration from New York University.
In the summer of 1968, after 20 years of military service, Robert retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and began a career in banking in San Antonio, Texas working with Broadway bank and Schreiner Bankshares in Kerrville. “Dr. Bob” was a professor at Incarnate Word College, Schreiner College, and Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). He retired from teaching in 2007 and was honored as Professor Emeritus at the OLLU institution.
In 1983, Robert married Catherine D’Angelo-Lewis, who became his closest companion and best friend during their 34 years of marriage. They moved to Fair Oaks Ranch where he was a key founder of the Hill Country Animal League/SPCA and served as their President for many years. Robert also served as a Chairman of the Kendall County Appraisal Review Board and the Fair Oaks Ranch Architectural Review Committee. Most importantly, Robert advocated tirelessly for the residents of Holy Angels School in Shreveport, Louisiana through his support of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Holy Angels Family Association.
A man of many talents, Robert was bright, quick, and loving, with an impish gleam in his eyes. He spent countless hours roaming the Texas Hill Country, collecting fossils to share with family and friends. Ambitious and hard-working, he embraced peace and serenity as he grew older, and never lost his boundless curiosity and love of learning. Robert was known for his extraordinary kindness and he will be missed by so many, including his family, friends, students, and those who encountered him as he charmingly made his way through the world each day.
Robert leaves behind his wife, Cathy; his five daughters, Teresa Rogers (Austin, TX), Karen Peterson (Peterborough, NH), Jeanette Scott (Austin, TX), Suzanne Carignan (Shreveport, LA), and Sarah Weinberg (Dallas, TX); and one step-daughter, Julie Morelli (Fair Oaks Ranch, TX). His son, Robert Jr., died in 1974. He also leaves five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and nephews. He is survived by seven of his siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Holy Angels Residential Facility, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA, 71106.
