Obituary for Roger Paul Hawn

Roger Paul Hawn, known to all as Paul, died Friday, June 30, 2017, in his Welfare, Texas, home in the loving arms of his wife, Mary Ann, and his children, Ann Elizabeth and David Edward.  Paul was born in Oak Lawn, TX and lived for 40 years in Dallas raising his children with their mother, Carol Ann Cole.

He launched his very successful career as a property tax professional.  In 1982 he co-founded AVTax, Inc. with his best friends, Charlie Pennington and Kerry Roper, which put his kids through college and funded many great travels and adventures over the years.  He served his industry as President and Board Member of the Texas Association of Property Tax Professionals.

Paul enjoyed family fishing trips to the south coast of Texas, traveling to see the red rocks in Sedona, AZ, the big trees in Sequoia National Forest, and everything in between including the occasional dozen raw oysters. Recently he enjoyed a trip with his wife to Italy, Australia, and New Zealand and came home with a kangaroo hide.

Paul proudly served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, Mobile Construction Battalion 8 from Feb. 1966 and served in Chu Lai, RVN through Sept. 1967 as an E-5 Illustrator Draftsman when he was sent home to the states.  He was honorably discharged in June 1970. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.

Following a bout of cancer, in 2005 he met and fell in love with Mary Ann Chandler of Boerne, Texas. It was a whirlwind love affair and they were married at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne on August 19, 2006.  Together they found a beautiful home on a rambling piece of the Hill Country overlooking the Hills of the Seven Sisters where they could share their love and life with their children, grandchildren and friends.  In 2010, Paul was confirmed into the Catholic Church and found his faith home where he attended mass and became a part of the Boerne community.

Paul was known to always have a joke (even if it was a pun) at the ready. He had a head for numbers as well as songs and was always singing or whistling a little ditty as he worked in his yard or built rock walls. He made a heck of a pot of pinto beans and the world's best fried egg sandwich, and he loved home-grown tomatoes and Corvettes.

Paul leaves behind his wife, Mary Ann; children, Ann & Clayton Medford (Virginia) and David & Kristi Hawn (Dallas); step-children, Clint & Krista Chandler (San Antonio), Jesse & Lupe Chandler (San Antonio), and Lance Chandler (San Antonio); as well as a slew of beloved grandsons, Tristan, Finnegan, Colin, Luke, Arnett, Norman and Hunter Joseph. Additionally, Paul leaves behind his brother, Charles & Joan Hawn (Columbus, TX); his sister-in-law, Sandy Hawn (Rockwall, TX); his much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as his friends, in-laws, and out-laws. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph P. & Mary E. Hawn, and his brother, Fred Hawn.

Daddy's last message to us was that he was "so proud of my family" and for us "to take care of and love each other," as his brother, Fred, had told him upon his passing in 2014.  Rest easy, Daddy. We will see you in the High Country.
