Obituary for William "Richard" Merchant

William “Richard” Merchant
Richard Merchant, a lifelong resident of Boerne, passed away in San Antonio on December 29, 2017. Born to William A. “Bill” and Vera Merchant on January 13, 1951, in Fredericksburg, Richard would have turned 67 in January.
Having spent his entire school years in Boerne, Richard graduated with the Boerne High School, Class of 1969, and then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the then Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State. Upon graduation, he drew upon his knowledge of the electrical trade learned in the family business and spent the duration of his working career in the sales of electrical and lighting products.
Growing up in the then small community of Boerne meant playing in the first game on the original “Merchant Field”, the construction of which was organized by his father on land donated by his uncle. He participated in Cub and Boy Scouts, the Boerne High School band, Jr. High and high school sports, and the FFA where he was actively involved in the raising and showing of market lambs in stock shows around the state. An avid fan of rodeo, Richard tried his hand at bull and bareback riding and continued to follow the sport throughout his life.
Richard stepped up as a civic volunteer in many roles including coaching and umpiring Little League baseball, as president of the Kendall County Youth Rodeo Association, as a director of the Kendall County Junior Livestock Show, and by serving on the Auction Committee of the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. A lifetime member of Kendall Lodge #897, Richard was also a member of Alzafar Shrine and Boerne Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron.
If you lived in Boerne in the 1980’s, a familiar sight along the streets would be Richard training for the marathons he ran. A veteran of four runs in the New York Marathon and countless others around the San Antonio area, he continued to run through 2010 when he ran the Rock & Roll Marathon in San Antonio with daughter Reagan.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Kelli Merchant, of Boerne. He is also survived by his children: daughter, Reagan and husband Bryant Harris of Spring Branch; son, Reid Merchant and Katie Kezar of Welfare; daughter, Autumn and husband Dwayne Johnson along with grandchildren Alex, Kaiden, and Ava; daughter, Ashley and husband Brady Constantine; and daughter, Alli Merchant, all of Boerne. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, he is also survived by his brother, Ray and wife Debbie Merchant of Boerne, and Aunt and Uncle Edith and Bob Gibson of Port Townsend, Washington.
Richard loved all sports and rarely missed an opportunity to follow his beloved Yankees, Crimson Tide, Dallas Cowboys and the Boerne Greyhounds, traveling the state to support the girls’ volleyball team. He loved to take his boat out to fish the flats along the Texas coast, to swim, play cards, and enjoy his family. A man of faith who loved and served the Lord, Richard and Kelli enjoyed attending the nineteen: ten Church in Boerne.
If ever there was someone who could find the silver lining in any cloud it was Richard, a genuinely a nice guy who could find the good in anyone and never had a bad word to say. Richard will always be remembered for his ability to laugh and smile regardless of what life dealt, and will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
