Elliott Bonnell McConnell, Jr.
06/02/1928 – 08/09/2018

Elliott (“Mac”) Bonnell McConnell, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 9, 2018. Elliott was born in 1928 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. After growing up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, he graduated from Kiskiminetas Springs Preparatory School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania. Mac further pursued his passion for science at Duke University, receiving a B.S. in Geology, riding around on his Indian motorcycle and entertaining football fans as the Duke Blue Devil mascot, in his spare time. At Duke, he pursued (and won) the heart of his future wife, Sara (“Sally”) Gerber. He continued his education at Penn State University receiving a M.S. in Geophysics.
Mac and Sally then left for Ozona, Texas to start his oil and gas career on a seismic crew for Magnolia Petroleum Company, moving numerous times in subsequent years. Mac worked for several distinguished companies: Mobil Oil (where he was instrumental in discovery of the big Coyanosa field near Pecos), General Crude Oil (serving as V.P. of Land and Exploration), Pennzoil (serving as President of International Exploration and Production), and Santa Fe Energy (serving as Executive Vice President Exploration and Production). Mac and Sally ended up in Houston in 1970, and following his retirement in 1986, they moved to Rockport, Texas in 1987.
For Elliott, retirement was just the start – ‘Mac was Back.’ In between spending time with family and friends (usually on the deck of his beloved Blue Devil), he served his community several capacities including time on the Aransas County Appraisal Review Board. He was elected as County Commissioner in 1992 and was subsequently appointed to The Texas Commission on Licensing and Regulation for 6 years. Mac had many hobbies over the years: fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, sailing, tennis, traveling, skiing, boating, and cocktail cruising (it is always five o’clock somewhere) - all the while surrounded by family and friends.
A second “retirement” relocated Mac and Sally to Fair Oaks Ranch in 2006. Once there, Mac enjoyed his time with his tennis buddies in Fair Oaks and continued his community involvement by serving on the board of FORCC, the Boerne School Planning Committee and the Boerne Star Advisory Planning Board.
Elliott will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Sally; daughter Marilyn (“Lynn”) B. Huston (David); son James D. McConnell (Mary). Grandchildren include Kimberly B. Huston, Virginia H. Kadlick, Benjamin B. Huston, James, Jr. and Sara O. McConnell. Great grandchildren include Huston and Mia. Mac is also survived by his brother James H. McConnell.
The family is very grateful for the invaluable help and endless positive support that Mac’s caregivers have provided for him in the closing years of his life, especially Ruben Morales.
