James Marvin Skaines, Sr.
James Marvin Skaines, Sr lovingly known as Hubby, Dad, and Papa to his family; Coach to many others, and Jim to friends passed away at his home in Fair Oaks Ranch Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the age of 87. James was born in Dallas, TX on July 10, 1931 to James Aaron Skaines and Ethel Bardie Adams Skaines. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Lena Marino Skaines; two daughters, Marvilyn K. Miller (Jim) and Cindy L. Jennings (Rex); one son, James M. Skaines, Jr. (Kimberley of Dubai; ten grandchildren James M. Skaines, III, of England, Troy A. Miller (Charity) of San Antonio, Zachary A. Miller (Karina), of McAllen, Christine L. Grimoldby (Michael) of England, Danielle D. Skaines of England, Benjamin T. Jennings (Bethany), of California, Emily K. Lucha (David) of Australia, Wesley A. Skaines of England, Lauren Joseph (Philip) of MA, Brian Welton (Elisa) of Brownsville; and two great-grandchildren, Landon D. Miller and Constance R. Grimoldby. James is preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild, Ashley Jennings. He attended John H. Reagan H.S. in Houston, received his undergraduate degree at the University of Houston, and completed a Master’s degree in Education from the Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. He served in U.S. Army as 1st Lt. at Ft. Benning, Georgia. James began his coaching career that spanned 42 years beginning in 1954-1960 as the assistant track and football coach at his Alma mater, Reagan H.S. 1960-1968 he was the head track and field and cross country coach at S.P. Waltrip H.S. in Houston. He then moved the family to the Rio Grande Valley in the fall of 1968 to pursue his dream as a college head coach. He successfully developed and coached NCAA champions in the track and cross country program at Pan American University (now known as University of Texas RGV) in Edinburg.
In 1981, Coach and Mary moved to San Antonio. He again began building a new program as head coach for the men and women’s track and cross country programs at UTSA where his teams won numerous conference titles including one NCAA All-American. From the summer of 1985 through the spring of 1988, he took the helm as UTSA’s athletic director and from 1988 until his retirement in 1995; Coach enjoyed the role as associate athletic director for NCAA compliance. He couldn’t sit still too long and even the golf course couldn’t keep him from answering the call to return to the university in 1999 as the interim athletic director. Some of his honors, accomplishments, achievements include 1949 – Texas state high school long jump champion. University of Houston – numerous college honors as a relay team member, sprinter, long jumper, and hurdler, Meet Director of the City of Palms Invitational in McAllen, Texas Relays committee member, Meet Referee for the Border Olympics in Laredo, various coaching committees for the NCAA, honored as the UTSA Roadrunners Founding Track and Cross Country Coach, member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, and longtime member and served as a board director at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club. After Mary, his kids, and grandkids, GOLF was his passion.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
