Obituary for Roy Chase Follett

Roy Chase Follett
Artist, Inventor and Newspaper Executive dies at 89

Roy was born in Kansas City, MO on Oct 3, 1929 and died in San Antonio, TX on Oct 21, 2018. He was curious, opinionated, generous, witty, creative, and sharp as a tack until the end. Roy grew up in Nevada, IA and was graduated from Iowa State University in 1952. He was married to his high school and college sweetheart, Doris Cook Follett for 66 years. They lived in Des Moines, IA for 30 years where they had three daughters, and in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX for 34 years. Roy was a veteran of the Army and served during the Korean War.
He worked in public relations at Drake University, the United Way of Greater Des Moines, and the Cherry Burrell Corporation. He worked at the Des Moines Register and Tribune for nearly 20 years, as Promotion Director and then Advertising Director. While there, he served as President of the International Newspaper Promotion Association (INPA) and was recognized for his contributions to the newspaper industry. He was also President of the Allentown, PA Morning Call Newspaper, and Executive Director of Advertising and Marketing at the San Antonio Light paper.
During his career, Roy served on many boards and building fund drives including the Des Moines Orchard Place, the Conference of Christians and Jews, the Allentown United Way, Allen College, The Register and Tribune Syndicate, Grace United Methodist Church, the Lehigh County Boy Scouts, and the Polk County YWCA. He served as Board President of the Des Moines Health Center, the Des Moines Science Center, the Des Moines Advertising Federation and he was President of his fraternity, Sigma Chi where he remained a Life Loyal member. He chaired the Polk-Warren County oral polio vaccination campaign, and was honored for his leadership of that campaign.
As an avid artist, he created hundreds of contemporary paintings and briefly had a gallery in Boerne, TX. Roy loved tennis and golf, the San Antonio Spurs, and Iowa State University sports. But above all, he loved and enjoyed being with his family. He is survived by his wife, Doris Cook Follett; daughters Ann Follett (Jeanne) of Minneapolis, Amy Follett Paul (Rob) of Fair Oaks Ranch, and Sarah Follett Verheyen (Dave) of Houston; brother Peter Follett (Joyce) of El Paso; grandson David Spence Verheyen; step-grandchildren Brendan Paul (Shannon), Brigid Paul Beck (Ron), Stephan Verheyen, and Samantha Verheyen; great-grandchildren Dixie Paul, Gigi Beck, and Maggie Beck, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a casual reception in celebration of Papa Roy’s life on Sunday, Oct 28th at 1 p.m. at Amy and Rob’s, 31010 Keeneland Drive, (Deer Meadow Estates), Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cressie Animal Refuge and Enrichment (CARE) at or at the reception. To leave condolences for the family, please visit and select obituaries.
