Ruth M. Koon
December 23, 1931 – October 7, 2017

Surrounded by her family and their unending love, Ruth Koon left this world to be with her Heavenly Father Saturday, October 7, 2017. Born Edna Ruth McCreary to Joseph and Edna Jones McCreary on December 23, 1931, Ruth lived her childhood in Buffalo, Texas and attended Baylor University where she graduated with honors and a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry at the age of 18. She earned her Medical Technology license and worked in Dallas at Beverly Hills Psychiatric Hospital. Ruth married Kellogg Hawes, although their marriage was short lived due to his untimely death. She subsequently married Homer E. Koon, Jr. and moved to Gainesville, Texas where her husband’s family resided and developed deep friendships with his family and her friends. She loved entertaining, gourmet cooking, and participated in social clubs and events. In 1972, Homer and Ruth relocated their family to Denton, Texas, and Ruth began working at the Denton State School where she was employed for 22 years, operating the medical laboratory as well as performing EEGs, X-rays, and Eye clinics, as well as assisting in medical research. Ruth was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, and an elder in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton. Several years after Homer passed away in 1997, Ruth relocated to Boerne, Texas where she lived at Morningside at Menger Springs and developed friendships that she deeply cherished. She was a member of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church. Ruth always had a deep sense of aesthetics and style; she had a strong love of mid-20th century. She loved art and music and enjoyed attending orchestral concerts and musicals. She loved history and had a strong interest in archeology. She loved her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her daughter Kristin Goodale, her husband Drue and grandson Grayson Goodale of Austin, Texas; her son Duncan Koon, his wife Brenda and grandson Gunnar Koon of Arlington, Texas; her son Colin Koon and granddaughter Diana Koon of Dallas, Texas; and her son Brendan Koon of Sacramento, California. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph S. McCreary and his wife, Linda of Fort Worth, Tx; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, as well as their children (known to them as Aunt Ruthie or “Fru Fru”). She is preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Jeanne Bergman of Houston and Alyce Boyd of Fort Worth. Most importantly of all, Ruth loved God. She long will be remembered for the love that she extended to others; but no one who knew Ruth will ever forget her infectious laugh that filled the room when she entered. She was a ray of sunshine. Ruth loved life, and we all know that she is now laughing with the angels including her friends and family members that returned Home to be with her Savior before her. She left an indelible mark on our lives, and she will be missed immensely. Mom, until we are together again, know that we love you…forever and always.
