Dr. Paul Howard Ratner
April 7, 1949 – November 27, 2017

Dr. Paul Howard Ratner passed away peacefully at home in Boerne, Texas on Monday, November 27th surrounded by his family, loved ones, and caregivers. He valiantly fought pancreatic cancer for over 9 months never having relinquished hope that he would vanquish it.

In loving memory, he is survived by wife Tamra Leigh; brother Robert Keith; sons Marc Benjamin, Ethan Samuel, and Brandon Brooks; daughters Sybil Kate and Rela Brynne; and grandchildren Ellison Hannah, Brandon Brooks Jr, and Celia Faith.

Born to Seymour and Sylvia Ratner in Brooklyn, New York on April 7, 1949, Paul attended Bronx High School before matriculating to State University of New York at Stony Brook and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1971. He received his Medical Degree from the Albany Medical College of Union University in 1975 and began a distinguished 7-year service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps achieving the rank of Major and being awarded both the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. In 1978, Dr. Ratner completed a residency in Pediatrics at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio and in 1979 was appointed as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and completed a two-year fellowship in Clinical Allergy and Immunology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1984. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and served on the clinical faculty from 1984 to 1994 and also earned an M.B.A. degree in management from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.

Beginning his medical practice in 1984 in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Ratner specialized in the treatment of allergies, asthma and immunology in children and adults. Concurrent with the start of his medical practice, Dr. Ratner also created Sylvana Research, which pioneered the study of new investigational medications about to be introduced through clinical drug trials. A titan in his field, he gave lectures worldwide on six continents on subjects of allergy, asthma and immunology and was a published author of over 80 articles in peer review journals around the world.

Dr. Ratner served as Chairman of the Allergy Section of the Texas Medical Association, Program Chairman of the Texas Allergy Society, Program Chairman of the South West Allergy Forum and Secretary of the San Antonio Allergy Society. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Allergy Society and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology, and a member of the American College of Allergy and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He was a core member of the Clinical Research Network (CRN) and a past Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of The American College of Allergy.

Dr. Ratner also served on the Board of Directors of the Winston School of San Antonio and as Chairman of its Medical/Scientific Advisory Committee. He proudly served on the Board of Directors of Any Baby Can of San Antonio and The Leadership Council of The American Lung Association. He also co-founded and served on the Steering Committee of Camp Broncho, the American Lung Association’s annual summer camp for children with asthma.

Throughout his accomplished life, Paul built a wonderful family that he deeply cherished. In 1973, he married Suzanne Jackie Sutton in New Orleans, Louisiana and over the course of their 20-year marriage, they welcomed a son, Marc Benjamin Ratner, in November 1976 and a daughter, Sybil Kate Ratner, in July 1980. In 1998, Paul married Tamra Leigh Sylvester in San Antonio, Texas and they welcomed twins, Ethan Samuel Ratner and Rela Brynne Ratner in March 2003.

Paul’s wonderful sense of humor was ever-present and he passionately enjoyed tennis, golf, literature, history, cinema, and aviation. An inquisitive and tireless traveler, Paul visited 55 countries around the world. But the world over, his favorite place to be was next to his wife, children, and grandchildren.

A public service honoring his life will be held Friday, December 1st at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
