Obituary for Rebecca Danziger Snell

Rebecca (Becky) Snell passed away peacefully on January 22 at her home in Boerne, Texas surrounded by family and friends.

Rebecca Williams Danziger was born in 1932 as the first daughter of John and Emmie Taber Danziger of Montgomery, Alabama. After graduating from the Miss Margaret Booth School in Montgomery, she and her classmates went on an excursion to post-War Europe, a trip that had a lasting impact on her passion for art and culture. Becky spent two years at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia before graduating from the University of Alabama, where she developed a lifelong passion for Alabama football. As a young woman Becky worked at John Danziger, her father’s department store, a retail experience which served her well in later life.

In 1952 she met U.S. Army Captain Dillon Snell of Michigan at the wedding of her dear friend Scottie Gayle Shepard to Army Captain Norman Allen II. The handsome “Yankee” from Michigan charmed the beautiful Southern debutante, and Becky and Dillon were married at Chapel No. 1 at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery in the spring of 1953. For the next twenty years Becky lived the life of a military spouse raising three children and setting-up homes from Colorado to New Jersey to West Germany and more than a dozen places in between. After an exhilarating life courtesy of the U.S. Army - including a trip for Becky to the war zone in South Vietnam in 1972 - the Snells moved to Boerne, Texas in 1974 when Dillon retired from the Army.

In Boerne, Becky immediately took to South Texas ranch life raising cattle, chickens, dogs and horses. Becky and Dillon hosted many family gatherings and parties at their gracious home, “Sunnybrook.” They welcomed Rotary exchange students from around the world, and established Camp Sunnybrook in the summers for the grandchildren. Becky was an active member of St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne and a member of the Daughters of the King. She was a proud member of The Colonial Dames of America. This intimate Hill Country community became, and remains today, the Snell’s loving home.

An active rider since 1940, horses were Becky’s focus in the 1970s and 1980s. With a fondness for Arabian horses and the intricate sport of dressage, Becky was the Editor of a regional equestrian publication, The Stall Street Journal, and a founding member and President of the Alamo Dressage Association. She was a USDF Region 9 Director, and USDF “Horse Person of the Year” in 1993. In competitions across the region, she and her horses, Ora Intriga being a favorite, earned dozens of ribbons. In 2007 at age 74, she joined the Dressage Foundation’s prestigious “Century Club” riding her horse Atraysa Santiago, age 26. For many years, Becky was the sole proprietor of Ranch Mart, an equestrian and ranch supply store serving the greater San Antonio region.

Becky is survived by her husband, Colonel Dillon Snell; three children John (Melinda), Ann (Gary) and Rob (Barbara); five grandchildren Katy, Sam, Ben, Christina and Dillon; one great grandchild, John Augustus; her dear sister Anne Danziger King; cousin Kitty Benedict Jones; and Norm Allen III. Becky’s younger brother John Danziger pre-deceased her in 2015. The family is forever grateful to the Boerne community, particularly the staff at Nurse Next Door, Franklin Park, Alamo Hospice, and St. Helena’s Episcopal Church for their loving support during Becky’s short illness.

A memorial service will be held in the Spring. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Becky’s name to Alamo Hospice, attention Ms. Erin Hicks, Executive Director, 1595 South Main Street, Suite, 101, Boerne, Texas 78006; or Hill Country Animal League, 924 North Main Street, Boerne, Texas 78006.
