Obituary for Robert Michael Canada

Robert Michael Canada
December 21, 1939 – February 26, 2018

Robert Michael Canada passed away Monday, February 26, 2018, at the age of 78. He was born in Port Arthur, TX on December 21, 1939. As a teenager, Mike met Judy Fleming, the very person he would later marry and devote his life to. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, Texas and then earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After college, he began working at Aetna Life Insurance Company. In 1970, he moved his wife and two young boys to Florida to work for Pat Ryan and Assoc. He later had his own companies; Canada & Associates Inc. and American Mortgage Company. Mike gave much time and effort to his children’s activities. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Fort Lauderdale, FL and served on its board. He also found time to serve with the Red Cross. While in Florida, he and Judy owned Passage West Fine Art Gallery for a few years. They remained in Florida for over 30 years before returning to Texas and making his and Judy’s home in the Hill Country. Mike was a true Renaissance Man. He loved the arts, the symphony, and theater, but at the same time, he loved hunting with his sons and friends, scuba diving and boating. He and Judy enjoyed traveling together and with their sons. There was nothing more important to him than his faith, family, and friends. Mike went quietly about God’s work, helping and mentoring others.
Mike is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy; his two sons, Mitchell Hand Canada and his children Caroline, Ian and Leland of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Warren Lee Canada and his children Breanna and Alicia of Jacksonville, FL; his sister Nancy Fikes Wetmore and her husband Jack of Houston, TX.; nephews Steven Roberts, Douglas Roberts, Kenneth Roberts, Clint Wetmore, and Chad Wetmore. He is predeceased by his grandparents Chester L. Hand and Kathryn Hand; parents Robert Pope Canada and Nancy Hand Fikes and her husband William A. Fikes; and his brother Chester Hand Canada.
