Obituary for Lucille Hettie Goertz

Sister Lucille (Mary Aloysia) Goertz, OSB
December 13, 1925 - April 22, 2018

Sister Lucille Hedwig (religious name Mary Aloysia) Goertz, OSB, 92, a Benedictine Sister of Boerne, went peacefully into the arms of God on Sunday, April 22nd 2018 in Boerne, Texas. Sister Lucille was born in Red Rock, Texas on December 13, 1925. She was the fourth of twelve children. Sister Lucille attended school and church in Rockne, Texas. Her teachers were Boerne Benedictine Sisters and were a great influence on her decision to enter the Benedictine Community on September 1, 1940. Sister Lucille made her monastic profession in 1946. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from Incarnate Word College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Our Lady of the Lake. She spent many of her early community years teaching at Catholic Schools including Immaculate Heart of Mary in San Antonio, Sacred Heart (Rockne and San Antonio), and St. Benedict’s in San Antonio. She also taught at St. Albert Hall in Boerne. Sister Lucille served in many roles in her Benedictine Community including Director of Novices, Sub-Prioress, and Prioress from 1974 - 1982. She also served as President of the Leadership Conference for Women Religious Region 12. Sister Lucille will be remembered for sharing her energy, enthusiasm, love, and grace with her Benedictine Community. She brought her Community forward following the mandate from Rome (2nd Vatican Council) to update and renew Religious Life. By her involvement in the Federation of St. Scholastica and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, LCWR, she was able to engage her Community in these organizations. Sister Lucille was chosen by the Federation to be one of their representatives in Rome during the 1980 celebration of the 1500th anniversary of the founding of the Benedictine Order. Sister also had a passion for being involved the Boerne civic community. Following her term in leadership she went on a sabbatical to Loyola Marymount, California. Upon returning, she worked in campus ministry at San Antonio College for two years. In 1985, Sister was asked by the Federation to be the administrator of the Benedictine Monastery of Covington, Louisiana for three years. When she returned, she graciously worked at St. Albert’s Early Learning Center for a year. In her retirement years, Sister Lucille enjoyed spending time with the children from Children’s Inn, keeping busy with small jobs, visiting her family, taking short trips by car, and going out to eat. After a fall and hip surgery she was unable to complete rehabilitation and lived her last years at Cibolo Nursing Home in Boerne, TX. The Benedictine Sisters wish to extend their gratitude to Sister Mary Rose Goertz, OSB and Sister Mary Louise Hernandez, OSB who visited Sister Lucille daily; to Lupe Valadez who assisted Sister Lucille with her lunch and dinner meals most days of the week; to Bonnie Stewart, Health Care Coordinator for the Benedictine Sisters, for her oversight of Sister Lucille’s care; and to the personnel at Cibolo Nursing Home and to Alamo Hospice.
Sr. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Hettie Bartsch Goertz; by sisters, Helen Frerich (Sonny) and Ann Bibb (Jim). She is survived by her community of Benedictine Sisters; sisters: Irene Goertz (Martin (d)), Sr. Mary Rose Goertz, OSB, Bernadette Beck (Gerald (d)), and Marcela Muehr (Roger); brothers: Rev. Alois Goertz, Rev. Victor Goertz, Mark (Barbara) Goertz, Elmer (Edith (d)) Goertz, and William (Patsy) Goertz; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
