Obituary for Darrell Gene Kuhlmann

Darrell Gene Kuhlmann
July 25, 1939 – February 21, 2018

Darrell G Kuhlmann left us unexpectedly on February 21st, 2018. He left without saying good bye, he hated goodbyes. He leaves a legacy of kindness and a love of the simple things that brought him so much happiness.
Darrell’s greatest joy in life was his family. With son James, he shared a love of fishing and BBQ. With daughter Elizabeth Ann (Kuhlmann) Sager, he enjoyed traveling and sharing gardening advice. Elizabeth married Thomas in 2001 and together they have 3 children. Darrell considered himself blessed when spending time enjoying the company of his grandchildren; Haley Elizabeth, Marie Elizabeth, Kristina Louise, Emma Grace and Jacob Corban. He made sure they always had dessert, two if possible, because he believed life was sweet. He played games with them, watched their choir performances, school plays and sporting events where he took pride in always being their greatest fan. He let them get messy, never enforced a bedtime, encouraged eating candy before dinner and supported the wearing of PJs all day because he wanted them to know they should never worry about the little things.
Darrell served honorably in the US Navy for 6 years. During this time, he served on the naval destroyer, USS Gearing, despite his dislike of the ocean and of swimming. Upon completion of his service, he moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked and raised his family. Camping and boating at the lake and tailgating at the Univ. of Iowa games were among his greatest pastimes. Every summer he took his kids on a road trip adventure to national parks or historical landmarks. Sharing with them the love of history, our country, adventure and exploration.
Darrell retired to San Antonio in 2006. One of his greatest pleasures was being outside. He spent hours every day tending his garden and the plants in his yard with his faithful dog Bodie by his side. He could usually be found working on one home improvement project or another, sitting outside chatting with a friend and a cold Miller Lite or inside watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play. He was uniquely able to appreciate every aspect of life and found happiness in every detail while simply being in that moment. Darrell celebrated life through action. He was attentive beyond compare, honest beyond reproach, and humble to a fault.
Darrell grew up in Crawford County Iowa with his parents William (Bill) and Marie (Hageman) and his nine siblings Norman, Donna Berka, Wayne, Lois Clausen, Betty Mefford, Carol Schiltz, Denis, Thomas and Lynn Holcomb. Family takes comfort in the shared memories of fishing in the creek, playing ball in the yard, training live stock for 4H, and tending to the farm. Stories go that he was the family driving instructor, teaching younger siblings and later nieces and nephews to drive tractors and cars out in the fields or back roads.
Darrell found true joy in talking with friends and strangers alike. He would take the time to talk to everyone, making it a priority to be welcoming and ultimately became a friend to all he met. Easily considered the truest of friends, Darrell found himself surrounded by those who grew to love him. He leaves behind many friends including Lloyd Carlson, Roger Maynard, Bill & Carol Green, Joel & Nancy Meyers. His gentle soul and calm demeanor was infectious and served as the purest of examples of how people should strive to live life. He made an amazing impact on those around him, inspiring the best of each of us not because of what he said, but because no one wanted to let him down.
With Darrell’s departure, we find solace in the knowledge that we are not alone. We are surrounded by those who knew and loved him. Although that empty space shall never be replaced with another, it will be filled with his memory and the love and friendship he blessed us with. A memorial will be held in March at his family home in Iowa.
