Obituary for Dennis John Sundin

Dennis John Sundin
8/14/1930 – 2/28/2018

Dennis John Sundin was born August 14, 1930 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota to the parents of John Arthur Sundin and Amy Lundahl Sundin. Dennis was the fourth of seven children and enjoyed his early life on the farm.
Dennis graduated from Wilmer High School in 1949 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force later that year. After basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and graduating from Security Service School, he was assigned to a small, remote outpost near Naknek, Alaska to monitor Russian activity during the Korean War. After returning from Alaska, Dennis was stationed at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio until he was honorably discharged in the fall of 1954.
Dennis met Betty Sue Cliffe at the Hot Wells Baptist Church in San Antonio in the summer of 1953 and later married at the same church on March 31, 1956. Betty and Dennis had four children (Randy, Brad, Susan, and Sharon) to whom they devoted their lives. Never have there been more loving and devoted parents.
Due to Dennis’s military training and experience he was hired by the US Air Force in 1958 as a civilian in the Security Service Command at Kelly Air Force Base. Dennis worked and served his country in that capacity until he retired on January 3, 1987.
In the fall of 1967, Dennis and Betty moved the family from San Antonio to a 14 acre piece of the Texas Hill Country between Boerne and Comfort. While living in the Hill Country, Dennis continued to commute to Kelly AFB for work and became involved in the community in various ways including coaching youth baseball in Comfort for many years; supporting every activity his children were involved in while in the Comfort school system; serving as a deacon in the Comfort Baptist Church; later becoming a member of the First Baptist Church of Boerne and actively participating in the “Helping Hands” volunteer group; serving on a committee that helped preserve and maintain the historic Welfare school house; and always helping neighbors in need.
Dennis passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of February 28 at the Hill Country Assisted Living Home in Boerne. The family wants to thank Linda and Craig, along with the caregivers at Visiting Angles of Boerne and Alamo Hospice, for their loving care of Dennis while he was in their care during the last months of his life.
We will remember Dennis as a man who deeply loved his wife, children and grandchildren, and devoted his life to serving his Lord, his family, his county, and his community.
Dennis is preceded in life by his parents John and Amy Sundin; brothers Paul, Gordon, and James; and sisters, Betty and Jewell, all of Minnesota.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Sue Sundin; his sister Shirley and her husband Dave Ulstrom of Minnesota; his children Randy Sundin and wife Ginger of Waring; Brad Sundin and wife Joanne of San Antonio; Susan Sundin of Austin; and Sharon Sundin McKool and husband Bill of Flemington, NJ; his grandchildren Eric Sundin of Houston, Laura Sundin of Dallas, Brandon McKool of Charlotte, NC, Alex Sundin of San Antonio, and Kristen McKool of Flemington, NJ.; and his beloved brother-in-law Eddie Cliffe and wife June of San Antonio.
