Obituary for Dorothea Ann Surratt

Dorothea Ann Surratt
04/02/1925 – 11/15/2017

Dorothea Ann Surratt slipped quietly into the hands of the Lord while living in Boerne, TX on November 15, 2017.

She was survived by her sister Lucille (who passed away 5 days later at the age of 103 years), her daughter Sandy and sons Lanny and Randy as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their families.

She was born the second daughter to Garrett “Guy” and Rose Berkenpas of Lafayette, Indiana, April 2, 1925. After graduating from Lafayette schools, she attended the Lutheran Hospital Nursing School in Ft Wayne, IN where she was affectionately known as “Berky”. She received her nursing degree in 1946.

She married E. Weldon “Pat” Surratt in 1948 and they had four children, Randy, Deryl, Lanny, and Sandy during the fourteen years the couple was together. The family moved often during these years from Ohio to California, to Texas, finally settling in Lubbock, TX in 1956 where Dorothea lived until moving to San Antonio in 2013.

As a single mother, she often worked multiple nursing jobs to provide for four ravenous kids and always ensured they had the resources and support they needed to be successful academically, athletically, socially and spiritually. A consistent and persistent supporter of her children’s endeavors she could be found on the sidelines cheering on her children regardless of the event, even if it meant housing a snake farm in the garage, keeping detailed scrapbooks of all important events, dressing the boys up like girls for a fundraiser, baking thousands of cookies, or hosting a graduation party at the house.

Throughout her life she served in many capacities as a Registered Nurse from general nursing duties to public health nursing, but she really loved the time she spent nursing infants in neo-natal intensive care including caring for a member of her family.

Across the miles between Texas and Indiana she stayed close to her mother and father but most especially close to her sister Lucille, visiting home for weeks almost every summer canning tomatoes, making applesauce, baking cookies and visiting in the years after her children left home. She was so close to Lucille that it was no surprise to the family that she and Lucille passed away within a week of each other, just to be together again.

Dorothea was a devout Christian who held close ties with the Lutheran Church until her death. She is now in the embrace of the Savior she was so faithful to here on earth.
